Week Seven: A Family Affair

Two Pecks, followed by two Alexanders, followed by two Spliethofs. That's one strange coincidence after our seventh week of NFL action. The best score of the week was posted by Lars Frejdh, who got all but one game right (and should have won that one--he had Sage Rosenfels and Houston beating Tennessee, which they practically did).

Week Six: Barbosa's 12

Congratulations to Eric Barbosa on getting 12 games right this week; that's good enough to overtake his dad Frank. Regarding NFL football, I missed most of it this weekend (see below), but caught enough of the Monday Night Football game to see that, once again, the NFL receiver has yet to be created capable of catching a football thrown by Joey Harrington. He can put them on the numbers, he can put them on the hands, he can throw them in Detroit, Miami, or Atlanta, he can toss them softly, he can pitch them underhanded... none of that matters. They cannot catch footballs he throws. Short of walking over to the receiver and handing them the ball, there's not much else he can really do. Poor guy.

NCAA football note: In a raucous good postgame time at Taylor's at the UO campus this weekend (UO 53, WSU 7), a barful of happy Oregon fans (that included a hoarse, sun-kissed me) were pulling for OSU to beat oh-so-close to No. 1 Cal on TV, in support of which we sang the Oregon fight song with the lyrics:

Ithink I speak for a lot of Oregon fans when I say congratulations to OSU for a great win, thank you, and we have now returned to our more normal attitudes of indifference or enmity.

Week Four

A 14-game week, with excellent showings by Lars and Beryl; Beryl is one of two Spliethofs among the top three in the standings. Not much else to say; I have to sit and think about, for the 50th time since Saturday evening, Cameron Colvin reaching desperately for the endzone from one foot away, on first down, with 25 seconds left in the game. Nobody emerges from the NCAA football season unscathed, I guess.
